When I saw Jason Carver’s new ink on his inner left arm, I was in a little bit of shock. I still am! Here’s the story of how it got there.
All I knew was that I wanted something to remind me, every day, to never become inactive.
Many people give up physical activity as they get older. I see the horrible consequences of a sedentary lifestyle all around me. I wanted a permanent reminder to never let that happen to me. The first thing that came to mind in the spur of the moment was the wallball target at the gym (which happens to be the logo)!
I just happened to be out with some of my oldest friends, and we were into seizing the moment. I actually don’t remember the name of the place or the artist (like I said, spontaneity!). It was on Center Street in Salem. They did a great job.
I started here in September 2007, right after they moved from the Kung Fu Academy to the old box. Three years and approximately 400 WODs later I’m still learning and getting stronger, faster, and more mobile.
The people are the primary draw. I’m hyper-motivated by Scott, Xia Xi, and Rochelle. Other great coaches have come and gone, but Scott, Roche, and XX have always been there to push me and move me to levels I didn’t think possible.
The members here are also awesome. A handful of members were there when I started and still are. Most members are “new,” but to me that means they’ve only been WODing for 1 or 2 years!
It’s easy to develop friendships at the gym, and I always lament when people stop coming for whatever reason. I once asked XX, “When people leave this gym … where do they go!?” He just laughed and replied, “They move on with their lives.”
If there’s something you want to be reminded of everyday, like friendship, family, “life,” or whatever, don’t overthink it, just go for it.
Jason, thank you and we are incredibly honored by your dedication to a life of health and fitness!
