Something I didn’t share, way back when I did my Who’s Who profile, was one of the most significant impacts that CFPDX/BOA has had on my life. At the risk of sounding over-dramatic, I believe it’s fair to say that the program very well may have saved my life. Here’s the scoop:
Back when I started the program I was somewhere in the mid 180 lbs range and in the worst shape of my life. I was having serious issues with snoring, and difficulty staying awake during my work days, and while driving. My wife at the time was often having to sleep in another room because of the severity of my snoring. At one point I fell asleep at the wheel, less than 500 feet from my house, and nearly drove onto the sidewalk, and into the neighbor’s trees and yard. Fortunately I woke up a split second before it was too late. That’s just one example of many dangerous drowsy driving incidents.
I suspected that the snoring and daytime exhaustion was attributable to sleep apnea, so I signed up for a sleep study to get a formal diagnosis. Sure enough, the sleep study came back with a positive diagnosis for moderate, obstructive, sleep apnea. If my case was moderate, I can’t even imagine how dangerous severe sleep apnea must be!
After the sleep study results I was referred to a sleep specialist doctor. This doctor offered solutions of throat surgery, a dental mouthpiece, or a CPAP machine. The doctor quickly discredited the first two options, and then proceeded to pressure me into purchasing one of the several CPAP machines, conveniently displayed in his glass display case. In my opinion there is some very unethical activities going on in the sleep disorder industry, but that’s another story all together. Anyway, I told the doctor that I wasn’t going to reside to using a machine for the rest of my life to only treat the symptoms of my condition, and that I wanted to find a more natural solution that would treat the actual condition. The doctor was clearly aggravated by my decision and began employing scare tactics, to try and pressure me into changing my mind and buying a machine. At one point in his ranting sales pitch he did say “the most natural solution is to lose weight”. I’m sure the majority of his clients simply ignore this option, with the attitude that using the machine is easier than trying to lose the weight, but my response to him was “yes, that’s exactly what I intend to do”.
I had been thinking about starting Crossfit for some time before this, but this appointment was the kick in the ass that I needed to actually take action. From the day of my first 101 class my condition began improving, and within a few months had completely gone away. I have promised myself that I will never, ever let myself get into that poor physical condition again. Crossfit Portland and Blue Ox are instrumental in my ability to keep that promise to myself. There are many reasons that I renew my membership year after year, but this is obviously not the least of them.
With that, I say thank you to all of you, and all you do. The gym and the community have unquestionably changed, and very likely saved, my life.
